Jaywick: Behind the scenes



Still catching up on a big pile of work to put on the blog, so in meantime here is one of my favourite shoots from the last year or so.

These are the rehearsal shots for the R&D of Jaywick which later became Carry on Jaywick which played that the Vaults Festival in 2017. Verbatim theatre is hard to do right, but this show was really on point. That and my Essex upbringing means that these images will always make me smile.

It's hard to overstate just how shitty the fluorescent lighting in this black-walled dungeon of a rehearsal room was,  but there is something about the grit of these images that just speaks to me about what performing arts photography should be - the stripping away of the superfluous and the telling of a story in light, shadow and grain.
